John Patterson and Christian Myers co-founded Vélocity Bicycle Cooperative as a spin-off to the non-profit viaVélo bicycle delivery and pedicab service started in 2009. Both John and Christian saw the opportunity and demand for a community-based and volunteer-run bicycle co-op in Alexandria, Virginia to grow and empower a more inclusive biking community through affordability, education, and embracing the fun of riding.
Along with a committed group of "Véloteers" that continue to be the lifeblood of the organization, Vélocity Bicycle Cooperative was launched in May 2010 and received strong support from the DC cycling community, Alexandria neighborhoods, and the City of Alexandria, Virginia. John managed the Vélocity Bicycle Coop administration, Christian ran the Vélocity Bicycle Cooperative bike shop operations and the youth education program, and "Véloteers" provided their hours, energy, and enthusiasm.
