🎯 Programs Committee Chair
Vélocity has been showing up in the community for over fifteen years — Bike Rodeos, youth programs, neighborhood events. Now we’re looking for someone to take that energy further. If you’re the kind of person who sees a blank calendar and thinks opportunity, this role is built for you.
Why this role matters
Vélocity’s programs are where the mission gets personal. A kid learning to fix a flat for the first time. A neighborhood discovering that a bike cooperative exists in their backyard. A community event that ends with someone riding home on a bike they just learned to tune. The Programs Committee Chair makes those moments happen — by organizing, connecting, and bringing the Vélocity touch to new people and places. Youth programming in particular is ready for reinvigoration, and this role owns that opportunity.
What you’ll do
- Oversee Vélocity’s community programs portfolio — including Bike Rodeos, youth programs, and community events
- Plan and execute approximately quarterly Bike Rodeos during spring, summer, and fall — scaling with community demand
- Lead the reinvigoration of Vélocity’s youth programming — identifying opportunities, building partnerships, and getting kids on bikes
- Identify new venues, communities, and partnerships to extend Vélocity’s reach across Northern Virginia
- Advise the board on program status, opportunities, and strategic direction
- Attend monthly board meetings and represent the Programs Committee
What we’re looking for
- Genuine passion for Vélocity’s mission and excitement about bringing it to new people and places
- Event planning and community organizing experience — a significant plus, not a hard requirement
- Creative, proactive, and comfortable taking initiative without a detailed playbook
- Strong community connections in Northern Virginia — or a genuine drive to build them
- Collaborative spirit — this role works alongside a dedicated volunteer community, not above it
How this works
This is an elected board Director seat — candidates are elected by the current Board of Directors following an expression of interest. You’d join the board as Programs Committee Chair with full ownership of Vélocity’s community programs from day one, supported by a team of enthusiastic Véloteers who show up ready to work.
Time commitment
Approximately 10 hours a month on average, with heavier periods around Bike Rodeos and community events. Anchored to the monthly board meeting cycle with flexible day-to-day involvement.
Why say yes
- Real community impact — your work puts Vélocity in front of new neighbors, new riders, and new advocates
- Creative ownership — youth programming is ready to be rebuilt, and this role gets to define what that looks like
- A board seat with genuine scope — programs, partnerships, and community presence all in your hands
- No dues, no financial ask — just energy, ideas, and about 10 hours a month
- A community of Véloteers behind you who are already showing up — you just get to point them somewhere exciting
