📋 Deputy Secretary

Every good mechanic keeps a service log. Every good board needs one too. Vélocity is opening its search for our next Secretary — and we’ve built this so you start strong.

Why this role matters

The Secretary makes sure our decisions, our history, and our progress never get lost. You’ll take the minutes, keep our official records straight, and get agendas and updates into the right inboxes so the whole board — and every Véloteer — stays on the same page. This is a Board Officer seat, which means it’s elected by the board and asks a bit more precision than some of our other open roles. If you’re the kind of person who takes great notes, keeps things organized without being asked twice, and wants real exposure to how a nonprofit board actually runs, this is built for you.

What you’ll do

  • Partner directly with the current Board Secretary during an initial transition period to receive a full handoff of records, procedures, and responsibilities
  • Maintain custody of the organization’s bylaws and official governance records
  • Record accurate minutes at monthly board meetings
  • Distribute agendas and minutes to the board and volunteer community in a timely manner
  • Serve as institutional memory for board decisions and precedent
  • Support the Board Chair in meeting preparation and follow-through on action items

What we’re looking for

  • Excellent written communication and note-taking
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and reliable
  • Comfortable with meeting administration and basic governance procedure
  • Discretion in handling official records
  • Nonprofit board or governance experience a plus, not required

How this works

You’ll join as Deputy Secretary, working directly alongside our current Secretary, Andy Fisher, to learn our systems, inherit our records, and get fully briefed — then ascend to full Officer standing within 60–90 days. No cold handoff: you’ll be ready to lead the record-keeping on day one of full standing, not still figuring it out. This is an elected Board Officer position — candidates are elected by the current Board of Directors following an expression of interest.

Time commitment

Approximately 10 hours a month, anchored to the monthly board meeting cycle. The initial transition period runs 60–90 days, working directly with the outgoing Secretary, before full Officer duties begin.

Why say yes

  • Real board governance experience — minute-taking, records management, and official process that reads as genuine leadership on a resume
  • A front-row seat to how decisions get made and followed through, with visibility into every part of the mission
  • Ownership of the board’s institutional memory — the story of Vélocity, in your hands
  • No dues, no financial ask — just precision, reliability, and about 10 hours a month
  • A guided runway into the role — train directly with our outgoing Secretary and ascend to full standing within 60–90 days, so you start confident, not scrambling

How to get involved

This one’s an election, not a sign-up — reach out to Board Chair Keith Bloom to talk it through before the board votes. Email board.chair@velocitycoop.org.
