John Patterson and Christian Myers co-founded VéloCity in May 2010, as a spin-off to the non-profit viaVélo bicycle delivery and pedicab service started in 2009. Both saw the opportunity and demand for a community-based and volunteer-run bicycle co-op in Alexandria, to grow and empower a more inclusive biking community through affordability. education, and embrace the fun of riding. Along with a committed group of volunteers that continue to be the lifeblood of the organization, VéloCity was launched and received strong support from the DC cycling community, Alexandria neighborhoods, and the City of Alexandria. John managed VéloCity administration, Christian ran bike shop operations and the youth education program, and volunteers provided their hours, energy, and enthusiasm.
